PHOSPHATE FACTORS DETERMINING LEVELS OF NITROGEN FIXATION

Phosphate plays a critical role in nitrogen fixation and now can be made available via the microbes in NutriTech. The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3) is an enzymatic process involving an enzyme called Nitrogenase. The Nitrogenase enzyme requires an energy base to perform its task, and this base is in the form of a phosphate compound called Adenosine Tri-phosphate (ATP). In low-phosphate soils there is often insufficient phosphate available to build this critical molecule, and the nitrogen fixation process is retarded or cannot happen at all. One of the most exciting attributes of our Azotobacter species is that they solubilize “tied up” phosphorus to provide an energy base for nitrogen fixation. RELIABLE, LOW-COST NITROGEN FROM THE AIR

Bioplin is the first Azotobacter-based product with nitrogen-fixing capacity over the entire soil pH-range from 4.5 to 9. Bioplin takes N from the air and fixes it into the soil. Product is diluted with water and applied via spray or through irrigation. There is no brewing or refrigeration required, and the product remains stable in the unopened container for a minimum of two years in temperatures below 120°F.

A review of Azotobacter products printed in the Acres USA newspaper suggested that the “ideal” Azotobacter product contains “100 million organisms (per gram) of a good, vigorous strain”. Bioplin contains a minimum of 1 billion microorganisms per gram (ten times the ideal level), and counts of 5 to 10 billion per gram are regularly achieved. There is not just one vigorous strain here, but dozens of strains `selected from the 126 strains developed by the research team over 30 years.

A shortage of necessary carbohydrate energy in marginal soils causes problems with most nitrogen-fixing products. Strain selection is the key to Bioplin’s capacity to fix nitrogen in marginal soils, even in the absence of adequate organic carbon. Azotobacter, like all microorganisms, needs carbon based carbohydrates (sugars). Azotobacter’s nitrogen-fixing capacity is linked to the availability of simple sugars. Typically Azotobacter needs the energy of 1 gram of sugar to fix 5 to 20 mg of nitrogen. The species in Bioplin are guaranteed to produce an average of 11 mg of nitrogen per gram of sugar in marginal soils.
